Remarks of Ambassador Paez during the 27th EDSA People Power Celebration

REMARKS OF AMBASSADOR PATRICIA ANN V. PAEZ DURING THE OBSERVANCE OF THE 27TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EDSA PEOPLE POWER, PHILIPPINE EMBASSY, WARSAW POLAND 24 FEBRUARY 2013

Magandang hapon. Dzien dobry.

We shall also honor the memory of one of our heroes, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino.

Thrity-two years ago, while in exile in America, Ninoy Aquino was invited to speak before the Asia Society in New York. There, he delivered the line that he is best remembered for. He declared, and I quote, "the Filipino is worth dying for." This was in 1980. Three years later, in August 1983, Ninoy Aquino came home despite his own ominous prediction that a violent death awaited him.

His ultimate sacrifice was the spark that triggered massive protests against a dictatorship. As the whole world watched, the Filipino people united and staged a peaceful People Power Revolution that ousted a dictator. In February 1986, we regained our birthright to democracy.

Our People Power Revolution inspired the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, the Solidarity Movement in Poland in 1990, the Bulldozer Revolution in Serbia in 2000, the Rose Revolution in Georgia in 2003; the Orange Revolution in Ukraine in 2004; the Cedar Revolution in Lebanon in 2005; the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyztan in 2005, the Safron Revolution in Burma in 2007, the Green Revolution in Iran in 2009; and the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia in 2011 which coaxed into growth the Arab Spring.

Let us link arms so that we could attain our common aspiration - the peace, stability and prosperity of our beloved Motherland

Maraming salamat po at mabuhay tayong lahat! (END)
