Spring forward FALL BACKWARD

Daylight saving time (DST; also summer time in British English) is the convention of advancing clocks so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn; several ancient cultures lengthened each summer daylight hour instead. Since 1996 European Summer Time has been observed from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October; previously the rules were not uniform across the European Union This year, European Summer Time ends (clocks go backward) Sunday, October 30, 2011:   At 3:00 AM local time, the clock is moved back to to 2:00 AM

67th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising

Poland prepares for one of its most important WWII anniversaries. August 1st will mark the 67th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, a heroic struggle by the Polish Home Army to liberate Warsaw from Nazi occupation during World War II. Although resistors were heavily outnumbered and the promised Allied help failed to materialize, they battled for 63 days in a conflict that would ultimately claim over 250,000 lives. This year there are numerous events taking place around Warsaw to observe this landmark event in Polish history. One hundred thousand leaflets will be dropped on the capital from a Hercules plane to encourage both residents and tourists to honour the 67 anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising with a minute’s silence this Monday at 5pm. “This project aims to honour the uprisers and remind Varsovians that when the sirens wail at 5pm, to stop and remember those who fought for the capital,” said Director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum Jan Oldakowski.
