Muti-Awarded Filipino Painter Rodney Yap Exhibits Art Works in Wrocław

The art exhibit of multi-awarded Filipino arist Rodney P. Yap themed “Primeval” opened last 20 August 2013 at 6:00 pm at the BWA Gallery of Contemporary Art in Wroclaw with Ambassador Patricia Ann V. Paez as guest of honor. The exhibit will run until 27 August 2013.

The genre of Mr. Yap’s paintings has been described as contemporary Abstract-Surrealist Impressionism. The flyer in his exhibit states:

“His art layering technique is multi-layered, with images underneath via calligraphic linear drawing automatism fused with intentional images. Rodney’s mental imagery conceived the entire concept prior to the execution of the pieces. In “Primeval,” Rodney explores a portal of choices presenting the symbiosis of thoughts connecting the past as what makes today and the future.”

Rodney says on his art: ‘I see my works like a child’s story books... lots of surprises and innocence that is why the title “Primeval” is so apropos. There is more to each painting than meets the eye as glaring images reveal themselves the more you look.”

Mr. Yap, who has been hailed as the “best in Asia” by Malaysia’s Dusun Magazine, comes from the Manobo tribe and was raised in Davao City, Philippines. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Major in Painting, from the Ford Academy of Arts in Davao City.

In her remarks, Ambassador Patricia Ann V. Paez who was invited as Guest of Honor, said that “this art exhibit happens at a best time because this year marks the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Poland” and that “ all Filipinos are very proud that the creative artistry of a Filipino is being showcased in Wroclaw.”

Noting that Mr. Yap studied at Davao City’s premier art school, the Ford Aademy of the Arts, Ambassador Paez said that the academy’s most famous resident teacher until his demise, was no less than one of the Philippines’ National Artists Victorio Edades, the father of modernism or modern art in the Philippines.

Ambassador Paez added:

“Modernism, as you all know, encourages experimentation in artistic expression and allows the artist to interpret reality the way he sees it as an individual. Mr. Yap, through his child-like crystallization of his sensory and cognitive perceptions, interpreted them through images in his canvass. These in turn, evoked varying perceptions from the viewers of his art.”

“In appreciating and understanding art, another surrealist painter, Mr. Sallida noted that “Filipinos are more emotional and visual, than intellectual.” We relate to art ‘in terms of sensual perception,” ‘ such as forms and colors’ rather than “as a metaphysical encounter of symbol and meaning.’” I, therefore, thank Mr. Yap for this very riveting sensual experience.”

After five postponements due to the inclement weather in the Philippines, Mr. Yap’s art exhibit finally opened due to the efforts of art exhibit organizer, Ms. Mabel Guia Acosta.

Ambassador Paez has invited Mr. Yap and Ms. Acosta to mount the art exhibit in Warsaw, after its final day run on 27 August 2013 in Wroclaw’s BWA Contemporary Art Gallery.
