PH Embassy hosts Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Philippines-Poland Diplomatic Relations

The Philippine Embassy in Warsaw hosted a reception to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Poland which were established on 22 September 1973.

Undersecretary Winid cited the signing of the memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation, the completion of the delivery of eight helicopters purchased by the Philippines from Poland, the designation of three honorary consuls of Poland to the Philippines, and the formation of the Poland-Philippines Parliamentary Group as the hallmarks of the bilateral relations this year.
In her remarks, Ambassador Patricia Ann V. Paez said that the Philippines and Poland are both Catholic nations and share the same values of love for democracy and freedom - the values that bind the two countries as friends, as allies, and as strategic partners.

She added that the economies of both countries are resilient and have opened many potentials for cooperation, stressing that many opportunities exist to broaden and deepen the bilateral relations. The envoy also noted that Poland used to have an embassy in Manila and expressed hope that Poland will re-open its embassy soon.

Ambassador Paez also urged the guests to read the four-page supplement on the bilateral relations as well as on the Philippines which will be published in the 20 September 2013 edition of the Gazeta Wyborcza.

Among the distinguished guests were the Thai Ambassador H.E. Bansarn Bunnag and his spouse; Malaysian Ambassador H.E. Jamaluddin bin Sabeh and his spouse; Indonesian Ambassaador Darmansjah Djumala and Vietnamese Ambassador H.E.Nguyen Hoang ; MFA Director for Asia and the Pacific Mr. Filip Grzegorzewski, the CEO of the Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) Mr. Krzystof Szymborski and the President of Lingaro Mr. Tomek Rogucki.

The celebration showcased the cultures of the Philippines and Poland. Three short videos about the different aspects of the Philippine culture from the Philippines' National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) where shown.

Philippine folk dances, specifically the "carinosa" and the "singkil" were performed by the Mabuhay Folk Dancers.



The paintings of Filipino artist Mr. Rodney P. Yap were also exhibited during the event.

Classic Philippie love songs such as "Maalaala Mo Kaya" and "Dahil Sa Iyo" were sung by Embassy Attache Ariel Gonzales and Mr. Noli Embradora. A CD of classic Philippine love songs whose lyrics were translated into both English and Polish were given away during the celebration.

Ms. Urzula Dudziak, composer of the "Papaya" song graced the occassion and along with Attache Gonzales demonstrated to the guests the steps of the "Papaya" dance, which was "invented" by TV game show host Mr. Edu Manzano. Mr. Alex Martinez, a Filipino semi-finalist in the singing contest "Poland's Got Talent" rendered several Polish and Philippine modern songs to the delight of the guests who danced the night away.
Three individuals who have contributed in strengthening the relations between the Philippines and Poland were given the "Gawad-Parangal mula Pasuguan ng Republika ng Pilipinas sa Warsaw, Poland. These were Mr. Waldemar Kruk of the Filipino Martial Arts Warsaw Club which has been promoting the Philippines' traditional method of self-defense called "arnis," together with Mr. Wojtek Zdunek and Mr. Dominik Szynkler, Mr. Ronaldo Farrales who maintains the website Pinoys in Poland and Mr. Alexander Visalda for his humanitarian work.

Dr. Jen Castaneda and Vice Consul Cecille Lao served as emcees during the event which was attended by about 150 guests from the government, the business sector, academe, media, non-government organizations, and the diplomatic community.
