What is a PESEL and How to get a PESEL?

PESEL, which stands for a Polish abbreviation of the Universal Electronic System for Registration of the Population, is a number given to every Polish citizen when they are born and registered in Poland. Moreover, foreigner that meet certain criteria or apply for it also can get the PESEL number.

PESEL for foreigners

How does it work with foreign citizens coming to Poland? From 1 January 2018, apparently you are granted your PESEL number ex officio if you get registered with your temporary or permanent residence address. Since getting a registered address is obligatory for anyone willing to stay in Poland for over 30 days, this means that a vast number of foreigners in Poland (those who are here not on the basis of a short-term visa solely) should have their own PESEL number.

What do you need PESEL for?

PESEL is obligatory for anyone who wants to e.g. get a driving licence, transaction in some goverment offices, or start a business in Poland (without it you will not get your NIP number). Some banks or mobile operators ask for it before signing an agreement with you; although it is not necessary from the legal point of view, it may be required by their internal regulations. When you try to register at your local doctor the PESEL number also needs to be provided

Documents Needed

  • „permanent residence reporting” or „temporary residence reporting” form,
  • a passport and a document obtained in the Republic Poland, i.e., a visa, a residence card, a permanent residence approval or a temporary residence approval
  • if a foreigner is the owner of the premises that he/she wants to register as his/her residence or has another legal title to them, he/she should present the document that will confirm this, e.g., a civil-law agreement (e.g., a lease agreement), an extract from a land register, an administrative decision or a court decision,
  • if a foreigner is not the owner of the premises that he/she wants to register as his/her residence and does not have any other legal title to them, his/her stay has to be signed and confirmed on the residence reporting form by the person having a legal title to the premises. The document confirming the legal title to the premises has to be presented for viewing in the office.

Babala: Mag-ingat sa illegal recruiters to POLAND

DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM!
