OFW Help in Facebook

FROM now on, assistance for distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will just be few clicks away.

This, after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) recently launched the “OFW Help”, an official Facebook page that allows the OFWs to access the government and request for help during emergency situations, especially when they are being abused or maltreated by their foreign employers.

OFW Help” aims to protect the rights of OFWs and promote their welfare.

The DFA underscored that the page is “primarily for emergency purposes only and not for labor claims.”

In its Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) note, it was stated that the page will specifically address urgent concerns of undocumented or irregular workers who are not members of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

All concerns sent to OWF Help will be processed by the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs (OUMWA) who manages the page.

From the OUMWA, concerns will be forwarded to the nearest Foreign Service Post or Philippine Embassy/Consulate where the Filipino worker is designated.

The embassies and consulates will do groundwork with authorities of the host government and the OFW’s employer.

The OUMWA will report on the progress of the case to the nearest relative of the OFW.

DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM!

Insurance Coverage for OFWs - Where to apply

What is OFW Insurance? According to the Republic Act No. 8042 , otherwise known as the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1955, as amended, all migrant workers must be covered by compulsory insurance policy when they work abroad. This law protects the overseas Filipinos and migrant workers and provides adequate and timely social, economic and legal services, protection to labor, and promotes full and equal employment opportunities. Taking into consideration the welfare of our OFWs during the current global health situation, this March 2022, POEA has released Memorandum Circular 10, Series of 2022 where it stipulates the Implementing Guidelines on the Expanded Compulsory Insurance Coverage for Rehires and Direct Hires.   This circular specifies that the OFW Mandatory Insurance now includes returning OFWs or 'Balik-Manggagawa’ and direct hires. Balik-Manggagawa / Rehires: OFW returning to the same employer and the same job site; or OFWs returning to the same...
